Theatre Discoveries in London

Musicals and West End shows are the movie stars in London’s art culture. Find out the shows that you need to see.

London is notorious for being the home to some of world’s best theatre and musical productions. It has an art culture that thrives and flourishes with thousands of creative working hard to present their work to anyone who will take the time to watch it. The most prestigious and exclusive drama schools in Britain such as the Royal Academy of Music and Drama, Royal Academy of Music, Central School of Speech and Drama and London Academy of Music and Drama are the training ground of world class actors. Their craft is developed and nurtured before they go on to become stars on the west end stage. It is these shows that bring in millions of tourists to London each year.

The centre stage for acting excellence is the National Theatre. Spread across three theatres, the Olivier, Cottesloe and Lyttelton theatre, it provides some of the top shows London has to offer as well as celebrity appearances. One of the most successful theatrical performances for the National Theatre is Misterman by Enda Walsh which was performed at the Lyttelton theatre. This is because the show is starred one of the great modern actors of our time, Cillian Murphy. He is best known for his work in 28 Days Later and Inception. He has also gone on to have roles in the fantastic re imagining of the Batman stories - Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises directed by Christopher Nolan.

The Woman in Black was originally written in 1983 by a woman called Susan Hill. It was later adapted to a stage play in 1987 by Stephen Mallatratt. It then went on to be one of the most successful productions in West End history being the second longest running play. This record is held by The Mousetrap. The Woman in Black began playing to audiences at the Fortune Theatre in 1989 and is still being performed today. Horrors and thrillers are genres not usually associated with the stage and not normally a recipe for commercial success in the theatre world but Stephen Mallatratts interpretation of the novel has defied this by combining unique story telling with powerful performances. This production would not be suitable for children under the age of twelve due the themes explored in the play.

Jukebox musicals have been highly successful and provide a great soundtrack for those who don’t always want to invest in hearing twenty songs for the first time. The musical ‘We Will Rock You’ at the Dominion Theatre has been the most successful jukebox musical basing its story around the songs by the band, Queen. There are original musicals like Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre and film adaptions like Shrek at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane that are great for nights out.
